Which AI Should You Choose for Game Development?

Choose a rule before choosing a tool

GPT, Claude and Gemini are model families. Codex, Claude Code and Gemini CLI are development tools that work with models. A game engine provides scenes, input and the running game. Start with a one-sentence rule: what does the player do, and when do they win?

Give each candidate the same prototype

Example brief: In the existing engine, build a single-screen game won by tapping three targets. Separate starting, playing, winning and restarting. Show the plan first, then changed files and checks actually run. Do not add accounts, a shop or a new engine.

Use the same project and engine version. Compare the completed loop and human corrections required rather than code length. This is a proposed evaluation, not a measured model ranking.

How to check the result

  • Do winning and restarting actually work?
  • Are engine version, language and plugins recorded?
  • Was touch input tried on a real phone?

A code response is not a playable game

A project that cannot open in its engine is unfinished. Verify the small loop before expanding art, audio and level count. A model’s explanation cannot establish that players will understand or enjoy it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a powerful LLM enough to make a game?

No. You also need a suitable engine, clear rules, verified code and player observation. One model is not the best fit for every game and team.
