Designing Puzzle Levels with AI

A level suggestion is not proof of a solution

An LLM can suggest layouts and rule variations. Valid JSON does not establish solvability. Define the rules, data fields and win condition first, then check every candidate independently.

Separate the generator from the validator

Example brief: Suggest three small grid puzzles with dimensions, start, goal and obstacles. Keep coordinates within bounds. Use a separate search function to check reachability under the specified movement rules.

Record the seed, generator version and engine version when using random generation. Godot supports fixed seeds for repeatability; preserve version and configuration too. Do not publish unverified candidates. Reaching a search limit is not proof that a puzzle has no solution.

How to check the result

  • Do fields and coordinates conform to the schema?
  • Does the validator use the game’s actual allowed moves?
  • Are solved levels understandable, with a sensible difficulty progression?

Solvability is not good level design

A trivial, repetitive or unnecessarily long puzzle may be mathematically valid. Observe whether players understand their first move. Consider hints, colour differentiation and touch targets as carefully as level data.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use an LLM’s proposed solution directly?

Replay the moves against the rules first. A plausible explanation can contain an invalid move sequence, so independent verification matters.
