Building Mobile Apps with ChatGPT and Codex

Separate planning from applying code changes

Use a conversation to clarify the user’s task and what the first release will leave out. Codex CLI can inspect and edit local project files and run development commands. Receiving an answer in a chat and applying changes to a real project are different steps.

Give Codex a bounded feature

Example brief: Inspect the favourites flow in this mobile project. Complete adding an item and showing it after the app reopens. Use the existing data layer; explain any proposed new dependency. Show relevant files and a plan first, then the changes and test results.

Provide the project’s run commands and supported platforms. Finish one user journey before asking for a broad rewrite of the application.

How to check the result

  • Do the changed files stay within the requested scope?
  • Can favourites be removed, and do they persist correctly after reopening?
  • Are checks that were not run clearly identified?

Generated code is not a completed device test

If the agent’s environment lacks the required iOS or Android tools, do not treat a build as verified. Try navigation, storage and error states on a real phone. Keep server secrets out of the mobile package and review the diff in version control.
