Turn personality into action

A curious character could explore; a helpful mascot could find missing objects. Choose the action players will repeat, then design how the character responds to it.

Check readability at phone size

Review the silhouette, colour separation and expressions on an actual phone. Details that work in video may disappear during play. Our original AntSort development artwork provides a visual reference for this discussion.

Try one movement cycle first

Combine idle, movement and success reactions in a short scene. Once control and personality feel right, scope extra costumes, actions or companions. An initial drawing should remain clearly identified as artwork.

Assess the character at small sizes and in motion

Our working HTML5 demo uses the ant and queen artwork from the AntSort files. The characters have different roles: one is controlled by the player, while the other is the delivery destination. For your own character, define recognition at small sizes, movement direction and contrast with target objects. The example demonstrates artwork within gameplay, rather than a complete animation production.
