GEO reporting: Measure AI citations, indexing and traffic

Track five distinct stages

Crawling, indexing, citations or recommendations, visits and conversions are different events. Bot permission is not a real bot visit. Verify crawler identities in server logs using the platform’s verification method, rather than trusting a user-agent name alone.

Repeat questions under comparable conditions

Record language, country, date, platform, visible model, web search status and the exact prompt. Run unbranded tests first and branded tests in separate temporary chats. Calculate brand mention rate and site citation rate across valid answers separately. Exclude errors and quota-blocked tests from the denominator.

Respect each source’s scope

Search Console URL inspection reports Google indexing; its performance reports show impressions and clicks. Do not generalize Bing AI Performance citations to every LLM. In GA4, examine identifiable AI sources and actual conversions; do not automatically classify unknown or direct traffic as AI.

Separate store clicks from actual downloads

In Play Console, examine listing visits, install-button clicks and acquisitions separately; a click is not a completed installation. In App Store Connect, review impressions, product page views, first-time downloads and redownloads. App Store Search can include ad-driven results, so distinguish organic growth claims using advertising data. Compare matching date ranges, countries and languages.

Frequently asked questions

Does no visible AI referral mean no AI traffic?

Not necessarily. Source information can be lost, visitors may decline measurement consent, or people may see an answer without clicking.
